“AVALANCHE” — IPA 2026 SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 

Led by the award-winning photograph Avalanche, this aerial collection follows surfers navigating the impact zones of breaking waves along Sydney’s coastline.

Seen from above, the ocean transports the viewer to a snowy mountaintop: foam becomes snow, waves collapse like avalanches, and surfers appear as small figures racing along the edge of collapse. Through this visual transformation, the photographs explore the split second in which control, danger and beauty coexist—and the fragile scale of the human body against the immense force of nature.
